Inspiring and Learning in New Haven

The New Haven Public School (NHPS) Fellowships are unique opportunities for Yale students to have an immediate impact on the city they reside in. Fellows will spend the school year building relationships with New Haven students, creating space to explore Chinese language and culture in public schools, and cultivating intercultural empathy and understanding. The NHPS Fellows will have a unique chance to grow a deeper understanding of New Haven’s rich culture from its future leaders.

What is the NHPS Fellowship?

This Fellowship is an opportunity for those interested in education and improving their own language skills. Fellows will gain knowledge of world language education in the U.S., teaching experience, and a better understanding of New Haven and its students. Fellows at Cooperative Humanities High School and Metropolitan Business Academy work with high school Chinese students, while the Fellow at Worthington Hooker School work with Chinese speaking English language learners in K-8.

What will the Fellows at Co-op and MBA do?

Each Fellow will work with New Haven high school students taking Mandarin Chinese at Co-op or MBA. Fellows will be working with multiple language levels. Fellows will be part of Chinese classes in-person and provide assistance for students pursuing Chinese through independent studies.

What will the Fellow at Worthington Hooker do?

The Fellow at Worthington Hooker will support students at Worthington Hooker elementary and middle school whose first language is Mandarin. The Fellow will work with Yale-China staff and the school’s ESOL teacher to support the students’ English acquisition and to provide additional academic support in Mandarin.

Fellow Time Expectations and Stipend

Fellows work approximately 4-6 hours a week and receive a stipend for the fall and spring semesters. Fellows will also be expected to participate in Lunarfest in February.
